About the course
The course aims to give comprehensive understanding of all stages of geological modeling. Students will study well section correlation schemes and structural models complicated by faulting. The course covers the fundamentals of the geostatistical approach to geological modeling, as well as facies analysis. The course discusses integration of petrophysical data into a geological model. Practical tutorials are included for the students to develop skills in building geological models using Roxar RMS. All parts of the course can be modified specifically for Petrel users.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course participants will be able to:
  • use different approaches for building and validation of correlation schemes of well sections,
  • apply practical skills in building structural models complicated by facies variation and faulting,
  • orient themselves in the basics of facies analysis of geophysical information,
  • use Roxar software for static modeling.
Course content

Day 1
  • Introduction to the theory of modelling
  • Building and monitoring of static and simulation models
  • Types of data for different stages of building static and simulation models. Stages of building a geological model
  • RMS interface. Visualization and data editing. Data uploading
Day 2
  • Facies analysis. Correlation scheme creation
  • Integrated structural modeling: horizon model & fault model creation
  • Data preparation for 2D reserve estimation
  • 3-d grid building. Upscaling of well data into grid
Day 3
  • Using geostatistics at all stages of modelling. Variogram analysis
  • Object- and pixel-based facies modelling
  • Petrophysical modelling. Permeability modeling. (tutorial)
  • Basic information about phase relative permeability, capillary pressure and J-function
Day 4
  • Saturation modelling. 3D reserves estimation
  • 3D model quality assurance
  • Application of results of geological modeling
Day 5
  • Data export for simulation model
  • Upscaling quality assurance
