The course covers the sedimentology basics. The students will learn how to build sedimentological models of terrigeneous and carbonate rocks. Theory and practice will be considered of handling core and geophysical material.
Upon completion of the course participants will be able:
- To build conceptual and sedimentological reservoir models;
- To understand the sequence of work with core material;
- To identify main types of sedimentary and carbonate rocks, understand how they were formed;
- To apply sequence stratigraphic method.
Reservoir Sedimentology Basics. Inner properties of sandbody;
Grain properties, sedimentary structures and textures, transportation of sediment, concept of bed form, classification; examples of bed forms;
Tutorial: definition of inner structure of sedimentary rock.
Concept of facies, classification of sedimentation environments. Facies association, primary units, textural analysis, studies of sedimentation masses and core material. Classification of textures: primary sedimentational textures, secondary textures.
Tutorial: Textural Analysis.
Spatial and temporal facies associations, genetic units. Core study, sedimentological column.
Tutorial: Building a schematic sedimentological column.
Electrometric facies analysis (basics, interpretation methodology); eolian sedimentation environments, fluvial systems (deposit transportation and sedimentation, sand forms and their distribution, definition of alluvial/eolian deposits in core material and outcrops).
Tutorial: Electrometric facies analysis.
Transitional sedimentation environments (estuaries and their types, facies and estuary complex lithogenous types, distribution peculiarities and typical structures of estuary deposits), marine deepwater sedimentation environments (marine sedimentation, typical facies sedimentation sequences, definition of littoral sediments in core material and outcrops).
Tutorial: Sedimentological modeling. Building schematic facies map.
General structure of conceptual geological model building, examples.
Carbonate systems. Organogenic structures.
Organogenic structures: geography and evolution.
Sequence stratigraphy of carbonate systems.
Oil deposits in carbonate structures. Reservoir types, poroperm properties.
