Reservoir Sedimentology Advanced

Price to be provided upon request

Dates to be agreed with the customer

Instructor(-s): Vladimir Mikhailov

About the course

The course is designed for geologists, geophysicists, engineers, petrophysicists or others involved in reservoir modeling.

The course covers practical use of knowledge about different reservoir sedimentology types while modeling. The students will learn how to integrate sedimentological concept of terrigenous and carbonate rocks into reservoir models. Theory and practice will be considered of handling core data and geophysical material. The course aims to give comprehensive understanding of all stages of sedimentological analysis for modeling uses.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course participants will be able to:
  • to build conceptual and sedimentological reservoir models,
  • to understand the sequence of work with core material for advanced use,
  • to identify main types of terrigenous and carbonate rocks, understand how they were formed and use that knowledge while modeling.

Course content

Day 1

Introduction to the theory of modelling (stages, main concept).
Sedimentary structures and textures, transportation of sediment, concept of bed form, classification. Examples of bed forms.

Tutorial: Concept of facies, classification of sedimentation environments. Facies association, primary units, textural analysis, studies of sedimentation masses and core material. Classification of textures: primary sedimentational textures, secondary textures.

Day 2

Carbonate systems. Organogenic structures: geography and evolution. Sequence stratigraphy of carbonate systems. Carbonate sedimentology, depositional environments and diagenesis. Factors controlling carbonate deposition.

Tutorial: Facies definition. Sedimentological modeling. Building facies map.

Day 3

Transitional sedimentation environments (estuaries and their types, facies and estuary complex lithogenous types, distribution peculiarities and typical structures of estuary deposits), marine deepwater sedimentation environments (marine sedimentation, typical facies sedimentation sequences, definition of littoral sediments in core material and outcrops).

Tutorial: Facies definition. Sedimentological modeling. Building facies map.

Day 4

Spatial and temporal facies associations, genetic units. Electrometric facies analysis (interpretation methodology).

Tutorial: General structure of conceptual geological model building, examples. Application of results of geological modeling.

Day 5

Oil deposits in terrigenous and carbonate structures. Reservoir types, poroperm properties. Diagnostic features.

Tutorial: Porosity Type Modelling. Porosity to Perm. Scales of Heterogeneity. Saturation functions. Managing Uncertainties.
